So somehow I got to reading some of the history behind making 1,000 paper cranes and now I have it in my head that this is something that I need to do. Great. I don’t even know how to make one paper crane, let alone 1,000! I have tried a few of the tutorials, but to no avail. I’m not giving up though. I want to get some origami paper and just do this. It’s supposed to be a healing process and they say that if you make 1,000 paper cranes you’ll be granted a wish.
Now, I don’t really buy into that. I just have a little feeling inside telling me this is something I should do and I honestly don’t have that feeling very often.
Yes people, this is my big announcement. I’m a little bit crazy and I think that making a fucking huge mass of paper birds is going to help me deal with all my inner emotional shit. We’ll see. I’ll keep you updated!
Hey last year around this time I was losing my hair from stress…so this is an improvement, no?
UPDATE: Wal*Mart doesn’t sell origami paper. I found this out after dragging Kasey out at 11:00 pm last night. Tonight before we go to the release party for that new Stephanie Meyer book we’re going to drop by Target and possibly A.C. Moore. Kasey thinks I am on the nutty side, but is supportive nonetheless. Her quote, “But where are you going to put them?”
UPDATE: Using this link I was finally able to make one!!!! I made it out of a picture in a magazine to save paper. What do you think? Not horrible for my very first one, right?

When I was in high school I worked in a public library. For story hour one month I told the kids the story of the 1000 cranes and then taught them all how to make them. It was a huge success, with kids bringing in cranes all month.
And now, I’m not even sure I remember how to make a crane. I should bust out some paper and re-learn!

Jill That sounds like fun. Well…if children can learn to do it then I certainly should be able to. Yes! Re-learn. It seems like a good way to spend some time.
Natalie - Me either! It just sounds like a nice story. It’s fun to do a project with so much meaning and history behind it. Plus I’m not very crafty and this seems like something I could do.
I totally understand the being busy part. Sometimes I look at my feedreader and shudder.

It looks fantastic! And I especially like the paper you used for it. It’ll be interesting to see them all with different papers.
I suppose making 1000 cranes is sort of meditative, like saying the rosary or chanting.

I agree with Alice—go green with the cranes—they will look so festive! Maybe just do a few in origami paper so you at least get to work with it, but I really like the idea of using old magazines. I’ll bet this is going to be really therapeutic for you.
Tell Kasey that you’ll store the cranes in your Coach bag until it sells
(or I win it in the giveaway)

Alice - I think so too. I have made 50 so far and it feels good to make them.
OT - I was gifted some origami paper so I will have to go non-green for some of them, but I like it too. What I would need is one of those things you put paper on to cut it (guillotine?) so that the paper is even. Check back Saturday! I totally don’t think the purse is going to sell on ebay. (I’m sort of relieved.)
